What to expect at your dog's first groom
Booking a new groomer can feel like a big step, for you and your dog. Here's exactly what happens from the moment you get in touch to the moment you pick up your freshly groomed pup.

Whether it's your puppy's very first groom or your dog is new to me, I want the whole experience to feel calm and easy. Here's what to expect.
Before the appointment
Getting in touch
Send me an enquiry using the form on my website, call me on 07415 499269, or message me on Instagram or Facebook. It really helps if you can tell me:
- Your dog's name, breed and age
- Which service you're interested in, or ask me to advise
- Anything I should know, such as nerves, health conditions, or problems at previous groomers
- The look you'd like, if you have one in mind
Puppies can come to me from their 2nd vaccination. If your dog is a puppy, my Puppy Intro is the perfect place to start.
On the day
Take your dog for a short walk and give them the chance to go to the toilet before you arrive. It helps them feel settled for their groom.
At drop off
When you arrive at the salon in Little Totham, we'll have a quick chat about your dog, their coat and the style you'd like. I'll have a look at their coat with you, so we're on the same page before I start. This is also the time to mention anything new, like lumps, sore spots or changes in behaviour.
I'll then give you a collection time and let you know when your dog is ready.
During the groom
Every dog is different, so I tailor the grooming process to your dog and work at their pace in a calm, quiet salon. A full groom includes:
- A bath with a shampoo and conditioner to suit their coat
- A full blow dry and thorough brush out
- A breed specific scissor or clipper cut
- A nail clip and ear clean
- A finishing spritz
How long does it take? It depends on the size of your dog. Small to medium breeds take between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours for a standard clip off.
If your dog is nervous
That's completely fine. I'll take things slowly, give them time to settle and build their confidence. Just let me know about any worries when you book.
If your dog is matted
If your dog is matted, their coat will have to be clipped short. It's the kindest option for them, as brushing out tight mats is painful. We can then grow the coat back and get the look you'd like, and I'll talk this through with you at drop off.
At collection
When you pick up your dog, I'll let you know how they got on and show you anything worth keeping an eye on. I'm always happy to show you how to care for your dog's coat at home between grooms. I accept cash or card.
Don't be surprised if your dog is a little sleepy afterwards. Grooming is a busy few hours for them, and plenty of dogs head straight for a nap when they get home.
After the groom
To keep that fresh groomed look for longer, keep up with brushing at home and book their next groom in 6 to 8 weeks. My cockapoo coat care guide and matting guide have lots of tips for in between visits.
Existing clients can view and manage their bookings any time through the client portal.
I can't wait to meet your dog!
